Bali Leads Indonesia in Hotel Occupancy, But the Numbers Need Context

Bali’s star-rated hotel occupancy reached 67.29% in July 2026. Strong provincial performance, however, does not necessarily mean every hotel is gaining market share.

Bali hotel occupancy reached 67.29% in July 2026, making it the highest among all provinces in Indonesia. According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the result was well above the national average of 54.55% and increased by 2.42 percentage points from June.

On the surface, this is an encouraging sign for Bali’s hospitality industry. However, hotel owners and general managers should be careful when using provincial occupancy figures to assess the performance of an individual property.

The headline number represents the combined performance of star-rated hotels across Bali. It does not show how demand is distributed between hotel categories, locations or competitive sets.

Stronger Demand for Upscale Hotels

BPS data provides a clearer picture of where the growth occurred. Five-star hotel occupancy reached 74.45% while four-star hotels recorded one of the strongest monthly improvements, rising from 60.95% to 65.42%.

This indicates that the increase was not evenly distributed across every hotel category. Demand appears to have shifted more strongly towards the upscale segment.

BPS Bali associated the stronger performance with improved visitor spending power. At the same time, cumulative international arrivals remained below the level recorded during the same period in 2025. This suggests that occupancy growth may have been influenced by the quality and spending profile of visitors, not simply by higher arrival numbers.

Why It Matters

A stronger market can temporarily lift many properties. The real question is whether a hotel is gaining its fair share of demand. When the wider market is improving, stagnant performance becomes a clearer warning that pricing, positioning or distribution strategies may need attention.
